#2 from 'Les estampes fleuries' (1908) -------------------------------------------- Phillip Sear plays 'At the foot of the Sphinx' by the French composer Gaston Paulin (ca.1861–1921). ------------------------------------------- I can find little about Paulin, but he studied (probably at the Paris Conservatoire) with Léo Delibes and Ernest Guiraud, and was known as a composer of songs. He is best remembered for his compositions for early motion pictures, including scores for pioneering works such as 'Poor Pierrot' (1892), 'Around a Cabin' (1894), and 'Le premier cigare' (1896). This placed him among the earliest composers to write specifically for the moving image. "The title of the set "Les estampes fleuries" can be translated as "The Flowered Prints" or "The Flowered Engravings." "Estampes" means "prints" or "engravings," referring to artistic prints or visual images created by engraving or printing. "Fleuries" means "flowered" or "adorned with flowers." This title suggests an artistic or musical work inspired by or evocative of floral-themed prints or illustrations, combining visual art imagery with musical expression. This kind of title fits within French artistic traditions where musical pieces often evoke images or scenes, similar to Claude Debussy's "Estampes," meaning "prints" or "engravings" (though Debussy’s was composed in 1903, a few years earlier)." (Perplexity AI, July 31st 2025). There is little Egyptian or even Sphinx-like about this beautiful piece, which conjures up rather the zeitgeist of the people looking at the coloured prints in their Parisian salons. Each piece in this set has its own opus number. This piece is dedicated to the French pianist Jane Debillemont (1859 - ?), who was also the dedicatee of pieces by Benjamin Godard and Alfred Jaëll. Interestingly, in her later years, she lived at the same address, and possibly shared a home with Magdeleine Godard (1860–1940), Benjamin's violinist sister.
