The Real Reason Behind Delhi Smog

According to NASA, burning of crops in the neighbourhood state of Punjab and Haryana is the main reason of smog in Delhi. A forecast by NASA points to high levels of fires and thermal anomalies in areas such as Punjab and some portion of Pakistan. A staggering amount — 32 million tons (30 billion kgs) of leftover straw — are being burned by farmers. This is an age old practice, and though the government has suggested alternative methods and support (such as using seeders that don’t required crop burning and subsidizing half of the cost of these equipment), farmers still find them unfeasible. The Particulate Matter which is not good for our lungs , is present in air in very large quantities i.e. PM 2.5 should not be more than 60 but it is as of now 7–8 times higher than the desired level. This particular matter can be easily dispersed by wind, but wind movement over Delhi is again very less. Also there is no sign of moisture/rain which can again help in settling down of the particulate matter. During a cricket match in New Delhi, Between India and Srilanka, the match was halted several times as the Sri Lankan players experienced chest pains and severe vomiting. The players claimed that the match was unplayable due to the weather condition. For the first time in history , players played with masks on.
