A Kansas utility company relies on 12 Cat® G20CM34 natural gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE) for 110 MW of flexible power that meets efficiency and emissions requirements. Mid-Kansas Electric Company (MKEC), a generation and transmission cooperative, has a power generation portfolio made up of coal, natural gas, wind resources and transmission line assets that include more than 1,000 miles of high-voltage lines. This diversified portfolio allows Mid-Kansas to provide reliable energy and transmission service at the lowest possible cost to 33 counties across central and western Kansas. Some in-depth research revealed that reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE) could make the most of Mid-Kansas’ resources and provide flexible and cost-effective power generation. As a result, MKEC worked with Caterpillar to customize a power solution for its new facility, Rubart Station, which runs on 12 Cat G20CM34 natural gas RICE units and has a nominal 110 MW output capability. While Rubart Station has become the most efficient installation in the Mid-Kansas portfolio, it is also Caterpillar’s largest natural gas-powered facility in the world to date.
