The Tatra Mountains form a rugged natural border between Poland and Slovakia. The Western, High and White Tatras are connected by a sublime 72km ridge dotted with 134 extreme peaks and towers. From the outset of the golden age of Polish mountaineering in the 1950s there have been traverses of the High Tatras in the summer. In 1978, the enfant terrible of the Slovak mountaineering scene, Pavol Pochylý, crossed the main ridge of the High Tatras in winter -- a feat which has never been repeated. In the winter of 2013, two Slovak mountaineers, Adam Kadlecik and Michael Sabovik, attempted something virtually impossible by crossing the ENTIRE ridge of the Western Tatras, the High Tatras, and the White Tatras -- always following the ridge -- alpine style, unsupported, in a single push, in winter. Anyone who has ever climbed in the High Tatras in the summer will hardly believe what these two accomplished in the winter. The Slovakian photographers Alena Koscova and Palo Barabas spent several days in perilous, freezing conditions filming the climbers. The award-winning film follows the pair both up close and from breathtaking aerial shots over rock, ice, and snow, and through maelstrom storms. The film is ultimately a stunning testament of the fearsome beauty of the nature world at its most extreme. The film so impressed the organizers of the Bergsichten Festival that they dubbed it into German. It is a classic tale of adventure and survival against insurmountable odds. It also stands as a vital affirmation of friendship.
