Anaerobic infections and its relevance to the skin with emphasis on Tropical ulcers

Anaerobes are found on the surface of the skin where they live as commensals. Occasionally, they can cause pathology especially when the skin is compromised in some way. In this video, Prof Patrick Yesudian explains the evolution of anaerobes and its relevance to dermatology with the use of two examples. The first example is of Tropical ulcers, which was found to be due to anaerobic infection following research done by Prof A S Thambiah and Prof Patrick Yesudian. The second, more recent, example explains how treatment of overgrowing anaerobes on fungating tumours can be helpful in dealing with the malodour associated with this condition.
