The rock formations in this part of the Susquehanna River were the result of abrasive erosion by silt and sand rotated by a hydraulic vortex. As the sediment laden water swirled it began creating a depression and as the depression becomes deeper and larger rocks become part of the erosion process. (see other videos in this series for a larger view of this river section) This is a classic example where you have vertical erosion with a stone worn to an oval disk and a smaller stone in the pothole to increase the erosion process. The larger potholes were formed by enormous flows of sediment laden water when the glacial ice dams farther north broke at the end of the last ice age.
