Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) | Swiss Post-Impressionist Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss post-Impressionist painter. Hodler was born in 1853 in Bern, Switzerland, into an impoverished family. After the death of his father, his mother remarried and his step-father was a decorative painter. The young Ferdinand was put to work helping out his step-father, and from there sent to apprentice with a local painter. In 1872 Hodler studied under Barthelémy Menn at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. Through the 1870s and early 80s, Hodler travelled in Europe, studying classical paintings from museums. In 1882 he had a self-portrait accepted in the Salon in Paris. Around 1890, Hodler’s early impressionist style, evolved to become more Symbolist. He developed a style that he called 'Parallelism'. He saw this as reflecting the order and repitition seen in Nature. Hence several works of this period show groups of similar figures. In 1892, Hodler exhibited at the 'Salon de la Rose + Croix', a series of salons hosted by Joséphin Péladan in Paris. These gathered together many of the leading figures in the avant-garde artistic and literary circles. Through the 1900s, Hodler joined with a number of German art groups including the Munich and Berlin secessions. These groups were set up in response to artist rejections from the exhibitions of the German academy, much like the independent groups set up in France, which led to the Impressionists and subsequent movements. One aim was to develop a 'German style', typically known as German Modernism. Hodler died in 1918. —————————————————————————— Music Inspiring Dreams by Keys of Moon Music Licence: Creative Commons Attribution SoundCloud / keysofmoon Youtube • Inspiring Dreams - Inspiring Piano and St... —————————————————————————— #Hodler #postimpressionism #arthistory #art #Claritas #symbolism
