Heta Toivanen talks about her exhibition and works presented at Gallery A2 in Helsinki 11.-29.9.2024 “The subjects of my exhibition are stones and water. I’ve always been fascinated by rocks and I’ve been observing them all my life. They are ancient entities shaped by the forces of nature. Water, on the other hand, is a “source of life” and often freely flowing. My paintings are influenced by the approximately one metre wide stream next to Kyynäspäänniemi in Kajaani and the large Ämmäkoski rapids flowing past the peninsula. My childhood and youth home is located close to those places and they are still important to me. Through light, the influence of colours, stones and flowing water, I try to describe feelings, thoughts, hopes and my past and present life.” Heta Toivanen (b. 1961) lives and works in Helsinki. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts as a painter in 1989 and has also studied for a year at Helwan University in Cairo. In addition to Finland, she has exhibited in Tanzania, Egypt and Spain. Toivanen’s paintings can be found, for example, in HAM’s collections. Video produced by Barbara Kaucher, 2024.
