I heard this song recently for probably the first time, nearly a quarter-century after its release, on an algorithmic Tidal "if you like that, you'll probably like this" playlist. (The trail started with the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" and I took the opportunity to subject my kids to a decade of trends in techno starting from the '90s.) It still sounds very fresh! At the time that it dropped, I definitely wasn't hip enough to be encountering it in the wild. Now... well, I'm still not particularly hip, but I have had a lot of crate-digging time in which to fill in the blanks. I would still never be let into the clubs where this is playing, but the algorithm is a terrible musical gatekeeper. At the time I'm sure I stuck a mental pin in it, going "add this to your list of love songs to cover in February", unaware that when Valentine's Day came and went, I would still be caught up in a mental miasma of unprecedented times in Venezuela, Minnesota, Cuba, and Little Saint James. But I have still not really been able to musically reckon with those, so in the meantime here's a belated not-especially-romantic love song with a "Your Own Personal Jesus" edge.
