Public Art at SFO: Dana Hemenway, The Color of Horizons

The Color of Horizons is a suspended lighted sculpture located above the escalator and stair opening at the southern-end of Terminal 1.  Hemenway’s practice is rooted in craft tradition, combining techniques of macramé and weaving with extension cords and commercial light fixtures to elevate and transform the object’s value beyond the scope of its functionality. The Color of Horizons speaks to the many forms and textures of the Bay Area—the golden hills of dried summer grass, the white fog that rolls in regularly from the dark blue and foam crested mass of the Pacific Ocean, and the nighttime glowing facades of the high-rise buildings of downtown San Francisco.
