Access to tools varies from shop to shop. Before buying a new tool, it is often a good idea to take a second look at the equipment already living in your shop. I often find myself in awe of how much I under utilize the capabilities of my machines. I am not a machinist so please do not assume that this is the best way of milling something flat and square. In fact, I am certain there are better ways. The goal of this video is to demonstrate the power of critical thinking in the face of a limited budget. You may not have the same tools as another maker, but you can still make improvements in the quality of your work by rethinking the ways in which you use the tools you have. The more intimately you know the capabilities of your shop, the better you can design your projects in ways that play to the strengths of your equipment. Don't fall prey to the trap of pining over what you can't have. It will lead you to try things that your shop isn't well suited to and you will be disappointed with the results. You have more than you think and a brief introspective stroll among your machines and hand tools may bring you to a marker that leads you down an entirely new style of making.
