Tourmaline from Manoel Mutuca Mine, Brazil

After the great response to our Fly on the Wall mini-series, we’re sharing more moments of Daniel highlighting standout specimens from the collection. The Mutuca Mine, part of Brazil’s historic Santa Rosa and Golconda pegmatite district, has produced gem-quality rubellite and Indicolite since the 1970s. Over millions of years, late-stage fluids dissolved much of the original host rock, freeing most crystals and sometimes hollowing them out. In rare cases like this, the erosion sculpted the crystal into a scepter. About a decade ago, a single small pocket at Mutuca yielded only five known scepter tourmalines, including this exceptional blue-to-green crystal, regarded as one of the top pieces. It features a vivid cerulean blue core at the base that shifts to a luminous green crown, an uncommon color pairing in tourmaline and an especially rare example of scepter growth.
