Professor Alice Marwick, from the University of North Carolina, discusses how online harassment often pushes targeted community members offline. "Almost every person I talked to...had toned down their internet presence as a result [of online harassment], because it was so hurtful and harmful to them that they did not want to put themselves or their families in that position anymore. And because of the ways that these tactics are leveraged, ...far more often against members of minoritized and marginalized groups,...they are pushing specific types of voices out of the public sphere. ...Because these tactics have been so effective, they have now been taken up by groups at all levels from sort of the highest levels of government to still the sort of online trolls, and unfortunately we still haven't really developed very effective ways at countering a lot of these things. And institutions still seem to act surprised every time this happens, although it's a very well worn playbook at this point." Recorded at the University of Cambridge, 24 April 2025.
