Today at Château de Razac, we finish one project and move straight onto another. The team completes the roof on the Laiterie hanger, marking the end of another stage of roofing work on the estate. With that finished, attention shifts to a structural repair on the carriage house, which is connected to the manoir as a perpendicular attached building. One of the lintels above an opening in the carriage house has failed, creating a potentially dangerous situation for the surrounding stonework. Because this is a stone building, the masonry above depends entirely on the lintel to carry the load. If it fails, the stones above can begin to shift or collapse. Removing it is a careful and slightly sketchy job. The team uses the telehandler to support the work area, allowing the broken lintel to be taken out safely without disturbing the surrounding structure. Once the damaged timber is removed, a new wooden beam is installed as the replacement lintel, restoring the support needed to carry the stonework above. With the new beam in place, the opening is once again structurally secure. This episode highlights another important aspect of restoring historic buildings — dealing with hidden structural issues and making careful repairs that keep the original character of the architecture while ensuring everything remains safe and stable. Follow along as the restoration of the Château de Razac estate continues, one repair at a time.
