Opened for play in 1991, Dunes West Golf and River Club is one of the Southeast’s premier golf destinations. Its player-friendly yet challenging 18-hole Championship course designed by Arthur Hills meanders alongside picturesque live oaks and marshes along the banks of Wagner Creek in South Carolina’s lowcountry. Repeatedly recognized as a world-class golf experience, Dunes West has been named among the Top Ten Resort Courses and America’s Fifty Best Courses. The meticulously maintained course is complemented by a 6000 square foot clubhouse with full service dining overlooking Wagner Creek and a full array of country club amenities including swim and tennis. The Club was acquired by the Wieland family of companies in 2005, not long after John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods acquired all the remaining residential acreage in the Dunes West neighborhood. In addition to drawing golfers, Dunes West is a favorite destination for special events including weddings and celebrations of all kinds driven by the breathtaking beauty of its natural surroundings and its unique sense of history. Dunes West stands on what was originally the site of the18th century Lexington Plantation. By the post Civil War era, the original Lexington was in ruins and the property was eventually purchased in 1930 by Henrietta Hartford, widow of Edward Hartford and one of the nation’s wealthiest women. Inspired by the surroundings, Mrs. Hartford developed an elaborate estate including a 32-room mansion filled with European antiques, oak lined avenues, a saltwater swimming pool, tennis courts, stables, guest houses and gardens. In 1937, Mrs. Hartford was remarried to Prince Guido Pignatelli of Italy. The Prince and Princess continued to visit the estate often until 1942 when it was destroyed in a mysterious fire. Today, the spectacular setting continues to have a one-of-a-kind, distinctively lowcountry allure for members, guests and homeowners alike. ------ JW Golf owns and operates premier golf club properties in Georgia and South Carolina.
