SHEFFIELD & TINSLEY CANAL Pt I ( Victoria Quays to Attercliffe ) July 2025

Back to my annual summer break from old railways …or only just so. I start on a three part exploration of the Sheffield and Tinsley canal, South Yorkshire’s most history-infested waterway, stretching from my home city itself through the Don Valley to #Tinsley and on to Rotherham. Part of the Don Navigation this coal shipping corridor wasn’t full created in one solid whack. The initial 1750s-opened portion from Rotherham integrated into the river Don only reached the border at Tinsley by barge due to restrictions imposed by the Duke of Norfolk with the remaining 4 miles of canal into #Sheffield centre’s Victoria Quays seeing light of day at last in 1819. We start at the city end and the aforementioned wharf with its wondrous selection of surviving buildings, not least the beautiful straddle warehouse, still standing large and listed to this day.
