David Allen, our Master of Wine and Wine Director talks about Langhorne Creek, its Shiraz, the History of Bleasdales and then tastes the 2018 Bremerview Langhorne Creek Shiraz. Bleasdale Vineyards in Langhorne Creek, South Australia is one of the longest continually operating wine producers in the country. The estate has around 20 hectares (50 acres) of vineyards. Soils range from well drained alluvial soils to brown loams over limestone. Irrigation is necessary in these dry conditions. Langhorne Creek's dry and hot climate favors red varieties, so Bleasdale has established long term contracts with growers in the cooler Adelaide Hills that supply grapes for their white wines. Founder Frank Potts arrived in South Australia in 1836 as part of the first British colony to the region. In 1850, he established a farm on a little more than 40 hectares (100 acres) of land in what is now the Langhorne Creek appellation in the Fleurieu Peninsula. In doing so he employed a system of levees and floodgates to cover the property in a meter of water and nutrient rich silt. By 1858, the first vineyard was planted with Shiraz and Verdelho, covering some 12 hectares (30 acres). Two years later, Potts had built a cellar, still and wine-press, and became the first winery in South Australia. Potts named the property after John Bleasdale, a prominent reverend in Victoria at the time and an early advocate of Australian wine. In 1948, the Bleasdale farm became Bleasdale Vineyards Pty. Ltd. when several of Potts' grandsons combined their properties to form a single company. The property had been divided by two generations of inheritence, and the forming of Bleasdale Vineyards combined again vineyard holdings with the winery.
