Where is the API space going in 2025? In this conversation with @treblle CEO Vedran Cindrić, we talk about their "Anatomy of an API" report which was recently published. It has a number of interesting findings! Generally speaking, what the report says is that API landscapes are still growing very fast, fueled by AI and LLM needs. The report also shows that practices around API management still are not ideal. Here are some numbers from the report: • API complexity is increasing: In 2023, typical APIs had 22 endpoints. In 2024, that number went up to 42. • APIs are getting more transactional: GET requests fell as much as POST requests were growing, about 4-5% in 2024. • Caching seems to be catching on: 304 "not modified" responses were going up from 2% to 8% in 2024. • Only 15% of APIs use rate limiting which is a simple security measure that more APIs should be using. • 52% of API requests lack any form of authentication, with the number slightly increasing from 51% in the previous year.
