This is the fifth release carried out by Tompkins Conservation Chile as part of its Rewilding program promoted in collaboration with National Park Agency (CONAF) to face the local extinction of this iconic Patagonian species. These five releases plus other actions such as the removal of fences, the presence of wildlife rangers, and poaching control have allowed the park's rheas population to triple. These encouraging results have been possible thanks to a collaborative work with the public and private sectors. The rhea is one of the most representative species of the Patagonian steppe, and its population increase will allow the recovery of its functions in the ecosystem, advancing in the restoration of the steppe, due to the role they play as seed dispersers. In healthy ecosystems, all species are present! Imágenes: Tompkins Conservation Chile Fifth reah release at Patagonia National Park, Chile 9 April 2021
