Sometimes the best adventures start with the smallest journeys. 🚆 In this video, we're hopping on the local train from Cabanas de Tavira to Tavira; a delightful 4-minute ride through the Ria Formosa landscape that costs just a few euros and transports you into the heart of one of the Algarve's most authentic towns. 🚂 THE TRAIN JOURNEY The train between Cabanas de Tavira (Conceição station) and Tavira (Porta Nova station) runs every two hours throughout the day, with first departures around 6:09 AM and last trains around 9:30 PM . The journey covers approximately 4-5 km and takes just 4 minutes each way . Ticket prices are incredibly affordable: · Single ticket: €1-2 · Round trip: Approximately €3.20 The train is operated by Comboios de Portugal and offers a direct connection; no transfers needed . It's the perfect way to base yourself in quieter Cabanas while having easy access to Tavira's attractions. 🏛️ EXPLORING TAVIRA Once you arrive, Tavira unfolds as a riverside treasure often called the "Venice of the Algarve" . Here's what we discovered: The Three Bridges Tavira's identity is shaped by its relationship with the Gilão River. The famous Ponte Romana (Roman Bridge) , while actually dating from the 17th century, sits on ancient Roman foundations and offers stunning sunset views across the water . Two other bridges: the modern Ponte Gilão and newer pedestrian crossings—complete the riverside panorama . Tavira Castle The medieval Castelo de Tavira, originally built by the Moors, rewards visitors with panoramic views over the town's terracotta rooftops and surrounding countryside. Entry is just €1.50, and the peaceful gardens make it a perfect escape from the streets below . Camera Obscura One of Europe's few remaining Camera Obscura installations sits in Tavira's old water tower. For around €5, you'll experience a live 360-degree view of the town created entirely by mirrors and lenses - a 10th-century invention that feels like magic even today . Moorish Architecture Tavira's name comes from the Arabic Tabira, meaning "the hidden," and five centuries of Moorish occupation left beautiful pyramid-shaped rooftops and intricate azulejo tiles throughout the old town . 🏖️ BEYOND THE TOWN · Ilha de Tavira: A short ferry from the Quatro Águas pier (€2 return, 10 minutes each way) takes you to pristine island beaches with warm, calm waters · Praia do Barril: Famous for its haunting Anchor Cemetery—hundreds of rusting anchors left behind by the former tuna fishing community, accessible by a miniature train from the ferry landing 🚆 PRACTICAL TIPS · The train station in Tavira (Porta Nova) is a short walk from the historic center · Trains run every two hours—check the schedule at CP.pt to plan your return · From Tavira, you can continue to Faro by train (40 minutes, €3 one way) · For the Ilha de Tavira ferry, walk 20 minutes from the town center to Cais das Quatro Águas Subscribe to myreturnticket.ca for more Portuguese discoveries and European travel gems! #Tavira #Algarve #PortugalTravel #MyReturnTicket #CabanasDeTavira #PortugueseTrains Full transcript.
