There is no mistaking the signature roar of Rover, the Village Guardian, from the Sept. 29, 1967 to Feb. 1, 1968 ITC series, The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan, AKA Number 6, was always defeated by what looks like a giant beach ball, that is when his escape attempts were not being foiled more directly by Number 2. There is more to Rover than just the roar. In the quiet moments between Rover's fierce outbursts, there is a subtly layered pastiche of sounds not easily discerned by the viewer. To hear Rover's "voice", in the clear, on headphones, invites thoughts that maybe it is more alive than Numbers 6, 2, 1, or even us, could ever imagine. (See link below.) In this video, we break it down for you, piece by piece, with a little aid from Audacity. And, something else to ponder: How would Rover sound today if the same manual, non-virtual, sound effects were created and rendered digitally? Would it feel the same? Enjoy! Thanks to thatSFXguy for posting Rover's sounds, in the clear, on his channel: • Rover Ball sound FX from The Prisoner 1966 Information about the actual sounds used was from a multi-part documentary, with commentary from many of those involved in the various parts of creating The Prisoner. Thanks to Pmg6portmeirion for posting it. There is a 4 part Rover segment, but, start at the beginning to learn the whole story: • THE PRISONER. STORY BEHIND "ROVER".
