“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” - Amy Beach Sung by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, New York City Director of Music: Julian Wachner Recorded in July 2021 at Trinity Church Wall Street and presented by Amplify Female Composers in the Fall Female Composer Fridays series, coordinated by Carolyn Craig and Janet Yieh. Amy Beach (1867-1944) was the first American woman to compose and publish a symphony. A child prodigy, she saw herself as a performer first and foremost, but was required upon her marriage at 18 to play no more than two recitals each year. Her husband also preferred she not teach piano or study composition with a tutor. Her Mass in E-flat Major, in 1892, was hailed as a major work, and her Gaelic Symphony in 1896 led to her membership in the "Boston Six", a group of prominent Boston composers.
