Another quick escape from Madrid during these crazy Covid-infused days, weeks and months. This time Steve and I venture out to an area quite badly hit by the virus: the País Vasco. Spain's northern Basque region is a land of pinchos, green hills, doughy skies and isolated villages. Using glorious Bilbao as a base, we eat as much as we can and head to the hills when possible in an effort to escape the heat of the capital. We visit Algorta and Plentizia, two old ports reachable on the metro. Then day trips to Bermeo-Mundaka and Balmaseda. We ate a LOT and there were various accidentally unplanned hikes. Far more places were eaten in as are shown in the video. Below is the full list. If you enjoyed the video please SUBSCRIBE for more content and a LIKE would be most appreciated! NOTE: To anyone bitching and whinging ‘the Gilda is from San Sebastián’. I know. Ffs. I meant to say Basque Country. Bilbao: El Eme - triángulo sandwiches Salón de juego - tortilla (breakfast) Periflú - tortilla 'Bodeguilla Palas' - pincho de bonito - unmarked bar El Globo - txangurro gratinado Cork - wines Bar Charly - pinchos Ander Etxea - Vermut Bar Baste - mejillones rellenos Bacaicoa - flame-grilled chorizo and mushrooms Taberna Plaza Nueva - rabas Txomin Barullo - txacoli and stuffed potatoes Algorta: Itxas Bide - pinchos Plentzia: Socaire - average Spanish fare Bermeo: Talako Kantina - craft beer Almiketxu - chuletón et al. Balmaseda-Zalla: The Old Quarry Tavern Pincho i Blanco - menu del dia Salud!
