APRIL FOOLED ME (Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields) This is one of my favorite songs of all time- and it has a fascinating story behind it! Jerome Kern passed away quite suddenly in 1945, in the middle of plans to write the score to a musical about Annie Oakley with Dorothy Fields- her idea! Kern and Fields had a successful writing partnership for many projects, including the Academy Award winning song “The Way You Look Tonight” and remarkably, their collaboration did not end with Kern’s death. About a decade later, a few unpublished Kern melodies were found, including this one, and Dorothy Fields added lyrics to three of them (for a musical project that never took off)- including this one. (Back to 1945: plans with Annie Get Your Gun moved forward, of course- but with Irving Berlin as a replacement, which meant he would write both music and lyrics. So Dorothy Fields only wrote the libretto of Annie Get Your Gun, with her brother and frequent collaborator Herbert Fields.
