Dr. Jeremie Fant of the Chicago Botanic Garden discusses his experience with growing native plants in containers in urban Chicago. What types of plants are successful, what less so, what birds and pollinators might be attracted and more. As a bonus, Dr. Nick Dorian, post-doctoral researcher at the Chicago Botanic Garden, takes us on a virtual pollinator safari, discussing the native bees we are likely to find in our gardens or foraging among the plants in our containers. Dr. Fant is Director of Conservation at Chicago Botanic Garden and also an avid urban gardener who has been growing natives in containers for over 15 years. Dr. Fant is a molecular ecologist using genetic tools to study ecological questions. His lab studies genetics of rare plants, how pollinators drive plant genetics, restoration genetics and the role of botanic gardens in restoration. Dr. Dorian is a population ecologist and conservation biologist interested in understanding the responses of wild pollinators to environmental change. His postdoctoral research is focused on optimizing residential and urban gardens for pollinator conservation. A key part of this work is empowering diverse gardeners through community education.
