This system handles fiberglass spools as they arrive on a multi-spool rack via conveyor. The fiberglass product can have high variance in spool diameter and strand management that has to be accommodated for in the tooling design. Product is picked from rack positions and presented to a wrapper machine. Spools that have been wrapped are dropped to a conveyor for transfer to the downstream area where they are labeled and sorted prior to palletizing. The automation system was designed to eliminate ergonomic and repetitive task concerns. It eliminated operator product lifting through the use of industrial high-payload KUKA robots and provided for the automated transfer, wrapping, labeling, sorting and palletizing of the fiberglass spools. Manual tasks are necessary in this process in order to address the complex nature of inner core removal and strand knotting, and they remain as the focus for human operators.
