Tung Choi Street in Hong Kong hosts a huge range of pet shops with its famous Goldfish Market on the northern end. As the name suggests, there's a litany of people selling goldfish in bags like you might see offered at prizes at old funfairs. It's a pretty incredible spectacle, packed with pedestrians and stalls that spill onto the pavement. The area is also known for its modestly priced bars and pubs and the Ladies Market on the southern end, past the footbridge, which I'll post in a separate video. If there's one thing I know about Hong Kongers, it's that they love their pets, and I filmed this video after exploring a few nearby reptile shops, including one that had a tegu walking around in a diaper. But I anticipate some viewers from the West might see larger mammals in windows (i.e. cats and dogs) and be a bit surprised, and I understand that. I considered not running this video at first to head this off, but in the end I decided to go with it because you never know when the law will change and shut these things down. Consider the death of city's many dai pai dong (大牌檔), a type of outdoor food market, which have largely been curtailed by the sustained effort of the Hong Kong government. It doesn't seem impossible that somewhere like this could vanish, too, and I know a lot of people have good memories of coming here as kids, so I wanted to create a record of it in case that came to pass.
