Delhi Riots: No Bail for Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam; Protest No Garb for Violence, Says HC

The Delhi High Court has denied bail to Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. The accused, who have been incarcerated for over four years under the stringent UAPA, sought bail citing the slow pace of the trial, which is yet to begin arguments on the framing of charges. The prosecution alleged the riots, which left over 50 dead, were a planned conspiracy fronted by the Shaheen Bagh protests. In its order, the High Court made a significant observation, stating, "Constitutional violence under garb of protest cannot be permitted." The court found that there are reasonable grounds to believe the prima facie allegations against the accused. This order marks a clear turnaround from a 2021 bail order in the same case.
