Every year at the end of the dry season towards the end of May, the hot air above the land rises and draws fresh air from the sea. The prevailing winds change direction and bring with them moisture-laden clouds from the Indian Ocean. This system of seasonal winds is called the monsoon and its arrival is both feared and hoped for…As it approaches, the fervour becomes palpable. From June to September, the monsoon provides about 75% of annual rainfall in India and remains the main source of fresh water for millions of people. When the storm threatens on the horizon, its arrival gives rise to a ritual questioning: if it’s too heavy, it could wash away houses and their inhabitants and destroy crops ... If it’s too weak, there will be insufficient crops, causing shortages and rising food prices.
