The executive branch of the government is responsible for executing the laws passed by Congress, and in order to do so, it employs millions of people in the bureaucracy. Laws are often vague and it's up to the bureaucratic departments, agencies, and commissions to make the rules more concrete. We'll talk more about the bureaucracy's rule making authority in another video. For this video, we just talk about how the bureaucracy works, the way it interacts with other government entities (in the form of iron triangles), and how the process for getting a job in the bureaucracy has changed over time (civil service reform). On the last topic, we consider the spoils system, the Pendleton Civil Service Act, and the more recent Civil Service Reform Act.
