What is DNA? www.dnagenics.com Get your DNA reports at www.dnagenics.com Upload your RAW DNA file. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is a molecule that encodes the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms. It is a double-stranded helix made up of four nucleotide bases: adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. These bases are paired together in specific ways, with adenine pairing with thymine and cytosine pairing with guanine. The specific sequence of these bases determines the genetic information contained in a DNA molecule. DNA is found in the nucleus of cells in the form of chromosomes. It is passed from parent to offspring and is responsible for the inherited characteristics of an individual. The structure and function of DNA was first described by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Today, DNA is widely used in a variety of applications, including forensic analysis, paternity testing, and gene therapy.
