I'm pleased to honour the first song request I've received in a VEEEEERY long time. Here's the best-known song from Paul McCartney's first-ever solo album - made even more famous by a live performance with Wings that became a hit single. Outside of this slick tune, 'McCartney' was a minimalist, experimental 'home-made' effort of fragmented sketches and improvisations. On this album, Paul - soon to have the most versatile and prolific solo career of all the ex-Beatles - played all the instruments and sang all the vocals (with Linda's assistance, of course)... the cool laid-back ethos was his way of dealing with the tumultuous circumstances of the Beatles' final days (not to mention that he recorded this album largely in secret!). Of course, because 'McCartney' was such an eccentric effort, the critics never understood it at the time. I haven't spun the whole album in years... it must be interesting to revisit it in hindsight. This is an original 1970 Canadian pressing with 'STERLING LH/RL' in the runout (indicating the handiwork of audio mastering legends Lee Hulko and Bob Ludwig) and Z24/Z24 cut numbers - https://www.discogs.com/Paul-McCartne... It's in far-from-ideal shape, so I ran it through ClickRepair 3.9.9 to clear it up for your enjoyment. It's clear from some of the low 'pops' here and there that it is pretty scratchy - still, it's amazing to hear what ClickRepair is capable of 'cleaning' without sacrificing the original mastering's dynamics & clarity. I also played it with my ATN3600L backup needle, which is designed to handle higher tracking forces than the yellow ATN91 needle I normally use... I bumped it up to 3 grams from the usual 2.5. Oddly, I'm noticing that Paul's fat bass isn't as loud and clear as when I played it with the ATN91 the night before - unless it's just me. Still sounds great!
