Dubbed the "Mistake on the Lake", "Eyesore on Lake Shore", and "Toilet Bowl on Sticks". WLS-TV ABC 7 unveils the newly renovated Soldier Field. Originally built as "Grant Park Municipal Stadium" in 1924 with seating capacity at 120,000, Soldier Field has been the site of many famous events for both Chicago and the world. The Chicago Bears called Wrigley Field home for 50 years until an NFL rule change forced their eviction as Wrigley could not meet the new minimum capacity seating requirements. After an exhaustive search around town, the Bears settled in at Soldier Field where they have played ever since, but it hasn't been all roses as the stadium was in dire need of repairs. Various smaller renovations have taken place over the years, with the most recent being in 1988 when the aritificial turf was ripped out and replaced with natural grass, but the overall infrastructure was the same as the day it opened in 1924. After much politicking, a deal was struck between Chicago Bears president Ted Phillips and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to rebuild Soldier Field and update it's infrastructure to modern standards. After much push back from the community about the project, a compromise was struck to preserve the historical facade of the stadium while building the new stadium inside the walls. Construction literally began minutes after the Chicago Bears lost to the Philadelphi Eagles in the NFC playoffs in January 2002. After spending the entirety of the 2002 season playing at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, the Chicago Bears return home to the newly renovated Soldier Field to face their arch rival, the Green Bay Packers, on Monday Night Football. At a cost of $320M, the contrast between the new modern design embedded inside the old Roman style architecture creates a clash of opinions. The controversy escalated when Soldier Field lost it's historical landmark designation a few years later. Despite being more than 20 years since it was completed, the city of Chicago is still paying off the debt, which has grown to more than $600M due to failure to pay the bill during the COVID pandemic and other times allowing interest to accrue.
