Automated plant delivery process at Gebr. Valstar | Labour reduction and optimal space utilisation

At the new location of Gebr. Valstar in Bleiswijk, WPS fully automated the plant delivery process. The objective was clear: increase efficiency, reduce costs, minimise errors and keep large volumes of plants manageable, especially during peak moments. The process starts when plants arrive from the greenhouse. After manual cleaning of damaged leaves, plants are placed into oval plant carriers. A camera system then assesses plant quality and characteristics, after which the plants are automatically sorted. The plants are transported via two conveyor lines to the Smart Picking and Placing robots. The Tray Destacker supplies trays at exactly the right moment, and based on input from the Order Control System, the robots determine how many and which plants are placed in each tray. Empty carriers are automatically returned for reuse. Next, trays move through the integrated Plant Spray Unit. Based on RFID registration and pot size, the correct irrigation settings are activated. The trays are then stored in the roller buffer system, which absorbs peak demand and creates a smoother workflow. If trays remain in the buffer longer than expected, they are automatically sent for additional irrigation to maintain plant quality. When an order is entered into the Order Control System, the operator scans the tray with a handheld device and places it onto the outbound conveyor, after which the tray is automatically transported to the correct packing station. Thanks to the smart layout of the workstations and the use of a roller conveyor, efficiency and a calmer workflow are created here as well. For Gebr. Valstar, automation has resulted in reduced labour dependency, fewer errors, optimal space utilisation and a calmer working environment where plants move towards employees instead of the other way around.
