Pump Priming - How To Prime External Jet Pump on a Shallow Well (water) DIY

How to prime a [well water] pump. External pump on a shallow well system. When the power cuts off, and a spigot is opened, air can get into the well's pump lines, restricting water flow. To get the pump working properly, the air has to be bled out by adding water to the lines while leaving an escape for the air when the pump is restarted. This is called priming your pump. It allows the pump to draw water without air, which is easier for the machinery and allows greater water pressure for you. This video demonstrates priming a shallow-well's jet pump. First, make sure the electricity is shut off. Next, shut off the line that supplies water to the house. (see video and [[notes]] below) Then, open the prime plug that sits behind the pressure gauge on this pump. Fill this opening with clean water. Reinsert the plug and twist it 3-4 rounds, leaving it slightly loose to allow air to escape, but tight enough to hold the plug in place when the pump starts up again. Turn on the electricity and watch the pump's pressure gauge to see how it is pumping. When its starts rising / 50~52 psi shows on the pump gauge, tighten the plug to re-seal the system. Allow the pump to run at pressure until it shuts off. This gives it time to fill the pressure tank (the blue tank with red button in this video). Once the pressure tank is full, the pump will shut down. (This smaller pressurized blue tank has it's own gauge. It is added to the system to protect the plumbing from sudden surges and spikes in pressure and allow for an even flow of water at the house. It also helps the pump run less often, saving pump and energy.) Once the pressurized tank is full, the pump will shut off. The water line out to the house may then be opened again. You've successfully primed a pump! [[On the water line to the house, turn the handle at a right angle (perpendicular) to the line to shut off the water to the house. Or turn the handle so it lines up with the water supply line (parallel) to allow water to flow to the house.]] Other Problems Low pressure When no air in system - Blocked foot valve or dirt in jet: Should this pump keep running but at only ~ 28 psi, the jet, protected by the foot valve, may need to be cleaned. This is where the water first enters your lines, down inside your well. This video also discusses how to use a 1" lift bar to pull (lift) the pitless adapter and lines from the well in order to clean the foot valve and jet; but that procedure is not part of standard well pump priming. It is a bonus lesson that came up in this video. If that is necessary, be sure to carefully clean all the dirt from the valve and jet (may require disassembly and reassembly) as even small particles like human hair can interrupt the supply. Also be careful to wipe the lines clean as they are reinserted into the well. Refilling these lines may take 5-10 gallons of drinking water or more, depending on the diameter of the lines and depth of the well. Note: This video is not for all well systems nor for all pumps. If you are not sure, consult a professional. We do not claim to be experts. This video is only meant to show how we prime this particular pump system. Yours may be a vastly different set up. Be sure to only add clean drinking water from a clean container to the system. Remember, this is your drinking supply. Do not contaminate it with chemicals or dirt or anything else that could harm you or the pump. This is also true when you are cleaning the lines to return them to the well. Simply wipe away any leaves, dirt, or grass with your hands or a clean cloth. Do not use chemicals or other cleaners that could contaminate your drinking supply. Please be careful around water and electricity. Water can cause you to be "grounded", sending electricity through your body, which can kill you. Use extreme caution or hire a professional. Priming: Make sure electricity is off. Close water line that goes to the house.[[]] Open prime plug on pump. Add water to pump. Reinsert plug and tighten 3-4 rounds, leaving loose enough for air to escape, but tight enough to hold plug in place. Restart pump by turning on electricity.* Watch pump pressure gauge. When pressure starts to rise (goal 50~52 psi) tighten plug the rest of the way so no water escapes. Allow pump to run at pressure until it shuts off. This gives it time to fill the pressure tank (the blue tank with red button in this video). Once the pressure tank is full, the pump will shut down. Open the water supply line to the house. The well pump has been primed! Done.
