How to Prime a Pool Pump | Leslie's

Before we get into how to prime a pump, let's cover what priming a pump means! Priming a pool pump means purging all of the air out of the pump, and filling it with water. This process ensures the pump has plenty of water in its system and doesn't burnout or overheat. Now let's discuss the steps of priming your pump: 💦 How to prime a pool pump: 1️⃣ Turn off the power to your pump and shut off the breaker. 2️⃣ Locate the diverter valve and determine if the water comes from the main drain or skimmer. Note the original position, then turn the valve so the water comes from only the skimmer. 3️⃣ For a multiport valve, set the valve to "Recirculate". 4️⃣ Open the air relief valve. 5️⃣ Open the pump lid and remove any debris from the strainer basket. Inspect the basket for any damage, and replace if necessary. 6️⃣ Check the pump lid and lid O-ring for any cracks or damage. If the O-ring is still in good shape, apply a layer of pool lubricant around the ring.
