How to Obfuscate API Keys in Your Swift Apps Step by Step with ConfidentialKit

In this tutorial, we’ll build a simple SwiftUI app that uses the Merriam-Webster Thesaurus API to fetch definitions and synonyms for a word. But more importantly, I’ll show you how easily a plaintext API key can be extracted from your compiled app—even without your source code. To address this, we’ll use SecureVail’s ConfidentialKit to obfuscate your API key with customizable encryption right within your Swift project. I’ll take you through the full setup: installing packages, creating the confidential.yml configuration file, setting up build plugins, and reading your encrypted key safely inside your app. We’ll also look at how to keep your YAML file out of source control so your keys stay private, even on GitHub.
