During the reign of Elizabeth I, a Portuguese Doctor rose to prominence within her royal court. Doctor Roderigo Lopez would become very close to the Queen and would be responsible for looking after her health, and also a number of the most influential members of her court. He fled Portugal due to his heritage and persecution which was occurring there and landed in England. When Lopez arrived in London, he began to continue practising medicine as a doctor and he secured a job at St Bartholomew's Hospital becoming a very well respected physician. He was a skilled man, and through his role he mixed with some of Tudor society's most prominent figures, treating patients like Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester who was Elizabeth I's favourite. However he would fall spectacularly from grace. When Francis Walsingham Elizabeth's spymaster died, Robert Devereux the Earl of Essex would take over his job. Devereux had animosity towards Lopez as he'd previously treated him, and he began to search for reasons to implicate the Portuguese doctor in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth. He found evidence in which Lopez had been communicating with foreign countries and he built a case against the doctor. Devereux accused Lopez of planning to poison Queen Elizabeth, and from this he was found guilty and sentenced to death for treason.
