"Kafka's Castle" is an improvised guitar solo by Max Ridgway, recorded on July 16, 2020. This music is meant to be a loose musical impression of "The Castle" by Franz Kafka. Of course, in a short music video like this, only the barest introduction to Kafka's novel is possible. It is my hope that anyone who takes the time to watch this video will be interested enough to read the entire book which is, in my opinion, Kafka's most profound work. For the tiny minority who are actually reading this, I will reward your perseverance by briefly describing the way in which this music was created: that is, through a spontaneous interaction between man and machine. Briefly, here is how it takes place: the improvised guitar performance is channeled through a series of interacting electronic effects that are altered and adjusted in real-time as the performance progresses. It should go without saying that this is a tenuous process that usually ends with an unsatisfactory result, one which is immediately deleted. However, after much trial and error, sometimes a magical result is obtained when human inspiration and electronic processes converge.
