Plotinus is one of the main historical figures in human history, 3rd century AD, associated with mysticism, and his influence is recognized by such key figures in Christianity as Augustine, Dionysius the Areopagite, Thomas Aquinas, and Meister Eckhart, as well as Jewish thinkers, medieval Islam and more. A Subtitle of this video is Christian Reflections on Plotinus and The Enneads. The video starts out with an introduction to Ammonius Saccas, the teacher of both Plotinus and Origen, and a brief history of a long lasting debate as to the Christian background of Ammonius Saccas, even recognized by Porphyry, the student of Plotinus and author of the Enneads. Then the video quickly moves on to all the key concepts in neoplatonism such as The One, containing no division, multiplicity or distinctions, but is prior to all that is existent, followed by the concept of noesis of the nous, or self-contemplating intelligence, the One being manifested as light, as suggested in the light of the sun (Monad) and the moon (psyche) a reflection of light from the sun (the Monad -One. The process of emanation is discussed from the perfect to lesser and lesser degrees as Nous or Divine Mind, Logos, Order, Thought, and Reason proceeding through all concepts of existence. A wonderful quote by Plotinus seeing the divine light is given and taken from the fifth Ennead, with a description of how this is made possible, followed by his beliefs on the acquisition of eudaemonia or happiness. There is a comparison that exist in this video between Henosis and the Christian concept of Theosis, as well as contrasting views regarding pantheism and panentheism. Contemplation is portrayed as a mind set on the attainment of eudaemonia by a Proficient who is in love of the One and is in a conscious state that is portrayed as blank or empty state of mind enabling the aspirant to be in union with the One (light).
