In the spring of 1940, the relentless advance of the German war machine had driven the French and British Expeditionary Force to the sea. As they arrived the soldiers were confronted with an unforgettable sight. To the east of the port along the 10 miles of beach, the entire length was swarming with tens of thousands of men awaiting to be evacuated. Many of them had waded into the water as they attempted to scramble into small boats. Trapped and exposed upon the beach the core of the British Army was on the brink of being surrounded and annihilated by the Germans. In a desperate gamble, newly elected British Prime Minister Winston Churchill launches one of the most daring evacuations in military history, Operation Dynamo. Had this evacuation failed or the men captured or killed, Britain would have been forced to sign a peace treaty with Nazi Germany. Ensuing events would have been bleak and we would be living in a very different and darker world today.
