See more Royal Navy Videos Here • Royal Navy The story follows a young recruit, Hale, from his London recruiting office to HMS Ganges, where he begins his training. The documentary covers every stage of life as a boy entrant, including kit issue and care, living quarters, food, drill, physical exercise and classroom instruction. Viewers see technical training at multiple levels, rowing a cutter, small-arms and gunnery practice, parade work and recreation. Footage also includes the signals school and the selection process for leading boys, reflecting the balance between discipline, teamwork and leadership. As part of their development, trainees at HMS Ganges regularly go to sea, spending short periods aboard a destroyer to gain essential experience. Having completed his training, Hale joins his first ship, participates in naval manoeuvres including an air attack drill and breeches buoy exercise, and goes ashore in Gibraltar before returning to sea. This rare film captures the traditions, expectations and spirit of Royal Navy training in the 1950s, offering a fascinating insight into how boys became sailors during the early Cold War. ⚓ Watch more restored Royal Navy recruitment and training films 📺 Subscribe for MOD archive footage, naval history and classic maritime documentaries #royalnavy #hmsganges #1950s
