This 1997 footage shows the 1931 Harley-Davidson VL in action. This motorcycle and factory sidecar stands as a landmark of the "Art Deco" era, representing the pinnacle of Harley's early 1930s engineering. Introduced to replace the venerable J-series, the VL featured a robust 74-cubic-inch (1200cc) "Big Twin" flathead engine, designed to provide the low-end torque and reliability required for both heavy-duty sidecar use and high-speed police pursuits. Its "Streamline" styling is characterized by deep-skirted fenders, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank integrated into the frame, and a leading-link front fork that provided a smoother ride than previous models. As one of the "Big Three" American motorcycles of the Great Depression era, the VL was instrumental in Harley-Davidson’s survival. It brought a rugged, versatile platform that eventually secured the majority of law enforcement contracts across the United States.
