Vivaan Shah says uncle inspired his role in ‘Ikkis’

Actor Vivaan Shah says he drew heavily from his uncle, retired Lieutenant General Zameeruddin Shah, while portraying Captain Vijendra Malhotra in Ikkis. The war drama, directed by Sriram Raghavan, is based on the life of India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetrapal, who was martyred during the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict. Shah’s character serves as a composed and sharp senior officer, offering a counterbalance to Khetrapal’s youthful intensity. Shah said he modelled much of his performance on his uncle’s dynamic personality and also studied available photographs and information about the real-life Captain Malhotra to bring authenticity to the role. He described the opportunity as a “real blessing” and said playing a smart and cool military figure was one of the great joys of his career. The film, which is now streaming on Prime Video after its theatrical release in January, also features Agastya Nanda, Dharmendra and Jaideep Ahlawat. Shah said one of his biggest regrets was not getting to meet Dharmendra on set, whose storyline ran parallel in the film. He added that his parents, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, deeply appreciated the film’s humane, anti-war theme and were moved by Dharmendra’s final scene. For preparation, Shah underwent basic military training at the Armoured Corps Centre in Ahmednagar, including drills, radio communication lessons and even driving a real tank — an experience he described as surreal.
