The Manila Cathedral serves as the episcopal see of the archbishop of Manila. It is also considered as the mother church of the Philippines along side with the Basilica of the Santo Nino in Cebu. The Manila Cathedral was originally called the Church of Manila. It was first established on 1571 as a parish church under the archdioceses of Mexico. Until Pope Gregory xiii made it into its own archdioceses in 1579. It was established by Fray Juan de Vivero. De Vivero was sent by the Archdioceses of Mexico to establish Christianity in the newly colonized Philippines.
