A woodland walk which opens up into a panoramic beach vista? That sounded like too good of a hike to miss out on! We were treated to a gentle stroll through ancient woodland alongside the River Heddon, as it winds it’s way down to where it meets the sea, nestled between some of England’s highest cliffs and periglacial landscapes. The Heddon Valley is also a SSSI site and home to a veritable buffet of wildlife including otters and the rare high brown fritillary butterfly. Near the beachside there is also a nineteenth-century lime kiln restored by the National Trust, well worthy of a quick peep! The opportunity for some stone skimming, pooling and rock hopping was definitely not going to be shied away from, we also went back to the stone aged, breaking open some flint using big rocks...surprisingly, no one lost an eye! A chilled, easy going day with a return through that beautiful woodland, the sight of a peacock leading us to the pub for a swift one before returning to the van! The Valley of the rocks was next up for an explore, a dramatic section of coastline on the northern edge of Exmoor, where we stubbled upon Mother Meldrum’s Tea Gardens, and when in Devon it would be rude to pass up an opportunity for a cheeky Cornish pasty and scone with jam and cream...done the Cornish way of course!!! After rolling ourselves out from the snack stop, a bimble along the coastal path was definitely on the cards. Taking in the sights from the top of Castle Rock gave views for days, we were also lucky enough to spot the elusive wild goats...which showed us absolutely no interest! As always, thanks for watching!
