Old-Time TOTW #163 is Wabash Hornpipe from the playing of Noble Olvin Page (12 June 1913--24 April 2005 of Adair County, KY. He was the son of Frank Wolford Page (1862-1959) and Dee Coomer (1880-1940). He married Edra Sparks (1916-1989) on 1 February 1946. (source: family tree and public documents) I was not able to find out much about Mr. Page, so I will quote his obituary: "Noble O. Page, age 91 years, a resident of Summit Manor Nursing Home, Columbia, KY, a long time resident of the Sparksville Community, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at Summit Manor Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Frank Wolford and Dee Coomer Page and was preceded in death by his wife, Edra Sparks Page on September 15, 1989. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Avis Campbell and two half-brothers, Otis and Elbert Page. Mr. Page is survived by one brother, Willard Page of Sparksville, KY, and special friends, Junior and Shirley Walker of Sparksville, KY. Several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends also survive. Noble was an avid musician and was well known for his love for Bluegrass and Country Music, a retired farmer and Veteran of World War II. Funeral service will be held today, Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with Bro. Lonny Karnes officiating. Interment in Haven Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Greg Sparks, Garth Sparks, Maxie Campbell, Billy Campbell, Rodney Burris, and Lonnie Page. Honorary Pallbearer is Lucian Edwards. Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements." Bruce Greene collected the tune in 1975. Robert Bruce Greene is known worldwide for preserving and playing old time Kentucky fiddle music. He is also a skilled old time banjo player, singer, and preserver of traditional Appalachian music and culture. Bruce has lived and worked among the people of Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina for more than forty years, bringing to his playing the intimacy and dignity he absorbed through his apprenticeships with musicians born as far back as the 1880’s. (this is taken directly from Bruce's website: www.brucegreene.net) Bruce Greene met Noble Page twice. The first time (about 1974), Page was coming from the barn on a rainy day and said he didn't want to play. He went back a couple weeks later, and Page played several pieces, some of which were cross tuned. Greene often drove back and forth between Bowling Green, KY, and Wildie (eastern KY) where he had a small farm. Bruce made it a point to stop along the way at country stores and ask about fiddlers in the area, and on this occasion, someone sent him to Page. To many of us in the Old-Time music world, Bruce Greene is a national treasure, but has never thought of himself as a tune collector. Greene told me, "I was just young and obsessively learning music, and thank goodness brought along a tape recorder, which in those days was a $30 Panasonic cassette recorder. I would buy packages of really cheap cassette tapes, like three for a dollar, because I was always broke. I think I was living on about three thousand dollars a year back then..." Page didn't tell Greene anything about the origins of Wabash Hornpipe, but the title presumably refers to Wabash, IN. Wabash is a city in Noble Township, Wabash County, IN. The population was 10,666 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Wabash County. Wabash is notable as claiming to be the first electrically lighted city in the world, which was inaugurated on March 31, 1880. However, closer inspection of the reference shows only the court house grounds were lighted. The town of Wabash was platted in the spring of 1834 by Col. Hugh Hanna and Col. David Burr.
