To overcome spinal cord injuries, one must try to promote nerve regeneration through the site of injury – the gap. In Prof. Xudong Cao's talk, he will cover the most recent advances in research to overcome the “gap” to achieve functional recoveries. Professor Cao received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 2001. His Ph.D. research was focused on tissue engineering strategies for nerve regeneration after spinal cord injuries. He further pursued his postdoctoral training first at Harvard University and then at Brown University researching genetically modified artificial living skin equivalents for burn patients. Professor Cao joined the department of chemical and biological engineering at the University of Ottawa in 2005. He is currently a full professor and the Chair of the department. His current research interests are biomaterials, tissue engineering and micro fabrications. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
