Let's take a look through the med school application of a premed who did a great job with grades but didn't do as well on her MCAT. I help her identify some weak points I see besides her 499 MCAT score and what I'd fix before reapplying. If you find this video helpful, be sure to subscribe, hit that notification bell, and check out al our premed podcasts at http://premedpodcasts.com. When assessing her own app, our student believes her MCAT score and some details of her clinical experience might have held back her application. We take a look at her AACOMAS application (for DO schools). • She had a 499 MCAT score, with a 122 chemistry/physics subsection score, which may have hurt even more than the overall score. • She got a C in calculus but mostly great grades otherwise: 3.72 cumulative GPA and 3.55 science GPA. • Activities section: How can you be sure not to "sell yourself" too much in your activity descriptions? • What counts as clinical experience? And how can you write your activity descriptions to make it clear that you're actually interacting clinically with patients? • Personal statement: Should you mention that you first got interested in medicine because of a medical TV show like Bones? As with many personal statements, we also focus on the need to really answer "Why medicine?" and include the right reflection on the stories you tell. At the end of the video, we also discuss whether you should include details about being LGBT in your med school application.
