American Rat Terrier or Decker Giant. Country of origin: United States. The Rat Terrier is an American dog breed descended from Terriers brought from Europe in the early 19th century by English working-class migrants, especially miners. Terriers were then used in England in particular to kill rats in a combat arena, a very popular activity at the time, but also very lucrative, because spectators could bet on the number of rats that the dogs would eliminate. The Rat Terrier thus comes from crosses between several breeds: the smooth-haired Fox Terrier , the Old English White Terrier , now extinct, the Bull Terrier and the Manchester Terrier. Rodent protection. In the years 1910-1920, the majority of American farmers owned at least one Rat Terrier to rid the fields of rodents with which they were infested, whether in the middle of the crops or underground, and to guard the farm. It was at this time that, in the Midwest, the Rat Terrier was crossed with the Whippet Greyhound and the Italian Greyhound in order to obtain more versatile and faster dogs, better able to hunt the hares with which the fields were full. At the same time, in the Center and the South, it was crossed with the Beagle to increase its flair, its hunting skills and its pack instinct. There were also, always during this period, crossings with the Chihuahua as well as with theMiniature Fox Terrier . This last crossing gave rise to the Miniature and Toy varieties. The Rat Terrier has many nicknames, among which we find that of «Rattie» or «Teddy’s Terrier», in reference to the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909), whose family had one, and who hunted regularly with it. It is not certain, however, that he owned quite the same dog as the current Rat Terrier, his having been endowed with shorter legs – a variety which took the name of Teddy Roosevelt Terrier , and is recognized by some organisms as a race in their own right. Its versatility (hunting pests and guard dog on farms) made it one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States between 1920 and 1940. In the 1940s and 1950s, farmers began to use more and more pesticides, so the Rat Terrier became less useful in rodent control. As a result, he saw his popularity — and his population — decline. A few Rat Terrier breeders nevertheless made it possible to maintain the breed. surge in popularity. In the 1970s, it experienced a resurgence in popularity. It was also at this time that a hunter named Milton Decker created a variety to which he gave his name: the Decker Rat Terrier. Today, the Rat Terrier, of all varieties, is essentially a companion dog with a very good character, even if it can be used for other tasks. It is recognized by all the major North American canine associations, whether it is the United Kennel Club (since 1999), the American Kennel Club (2013) or the Continental Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club. (2015). On the other hand, it is still not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the Société Centrale Canine (SCC), nor by The Kennel Club in Great Britain. In fact, the Rat Terrier remains a typically American breed, and is extremely rare outside of North America. 00:00 American Rat Terrier or Decker Giant.
